While going door to door and meeting with citizens this topic almost always comes up.

“What are you going to do about the homeless in our city?”

We all know this is a complex issue-all the more the reason it deserves proactive and ongoing discussion. As a City Councillor  I’m open to new ideas and making changes but where do we start?

My strategy for tackling the unhoused situation at a municipal level, focusses on 3 key ideas:

  1. I want to work with and encourage local builders to create balanced communities that include affordable housing options for single parents or young people just starting out.

  2. I plan to better equip FCSS and local agencies such as Leduc and Regional Housing Foundation that are on the front lines.  I’ve heard it said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  With up to 60% of families living pay cheque to pay cheque a sickness or injury can be devastating financially and is one of the top 3 causes of houselessness.  Having programs available to bridge that gap helps prevent houselessness in the first place.

  3. Continue to support programs and not for profit organizations that help people get connected and to to overcome addictions and to see them re-join the work force.

Ultimately, I will not tolerate our citizens being confronted or accosted, having their property stolen or trashed, or illegal dwellings put up in our city. We have a right to live in a safe community and I plan to stand up for that right.

While I may not have all the answers I will not tire of listening to your concerns. I will continue working towards solutions that help keep Leduc safe and help those who need and want a hand up.
