Traffic Safety

Many people have reached out by email or had concerns as I walk door to door about speeding and running stop signs especially in playground zones. As someone that enjoys riding my bicycle to work I understand the concerns I've heard regarding traffic safety. I've had my share of near misses as I have walked my bike across crosswalks to and from work. My Dad was also killed by a speeding motorist so I have felt first hand the impact of dangerous driving. Citizens seem happy with the change of residential speed limits to 40km/hr but feel it has had little impact due to lack of enforcement. While I have no interest in returning to the days of red light or speed camera's I do recognize that we need strategies to help make our streets safe and prevent injuries. As a chiropractor I see the impact motor vehicle accidents cause and the seriousness of the related injuries. The point of this blog is to present the concern. Over the next month I will continue to listen as I go door to door and meet with people. I will not only be listening to concerns but also possible solutions. If elected to City council I will take what I have learned and continue public consultation on the issue. Some residents have proposed adding speed bumps or increasing enforcement. I would consult residents in areas like Alton Drive that already have speed bumps to learn about their effectiveness. I would consult city planning on the input and maintenance cost, public works on the impact on snow clearing and local law enforcement regarding best practices and current enforcement strategies. Once all due diligence has been done potential strategies would be presented to address Traffic Safety. Although this was not a center point of my platform I want you to know that I'm listening to your concerns. We want to create solutions that don't create more problems (for example the closing of 47 ave access). We can do this through consultation, research and methodical analysis. I look forward to tackling concerns like traffic safety if elected as your representative on Leduc city council.
